Water level of river Barak flowing at 20.79mtr over 19.83mtr danger level; Roypur embankment overtopped

Incessant downpour has turned out to be a nightmare for the people of Barak Valley and the adjoining regions. The water level of the river Barak was “falling” at a relieving rate of 1 CM per hour at 2:00 am, after staying “steady” for a few hours. That falling trend came as a much needed relief but then it lasted only a few moments.

The heavy rainfall managed to reverse the trend. At around 6:00am the water level at Annapurna Ghat started to rise once again. From 6:00am to 7:00am, the water was rising at 1 cm per hour, but at 7:00 am, the recorded rise was at 3cm per hour, at 8:00am it reached to rising at 5:00cm per hour and at 9:00am it was recorded rising at 7cm per hour. River Barak at Annapurna Ghat is flowing at 20.75mtr against the danger level of 19.83mtr.  As per the 10am update, the water level at Annapurna Ghat is at 20.79mtr.

Meanwhile, the sudden rise in water level at the rate of 7cm per hour has put the embankments in danger. Overtopping has been reported at Roypur embankment in Borkhola. The executive engineer, speaking with Barak Bulletin said that men are at work to prevent any sort of breach. “So far, the dyke system is safe and there hasn’t been any breach. However, the water level is rising at an alarming rate putting the dyke system under immense pressure. The heavy downpour is making it difficult for the men at work,” said K Zaman, Executive Engineer, Water Resource, Silchar.

It is worth mentioning here that Roypur L/B is a Rs 19 crore under construction project.

The flood condition is most affected Katigorah LAC continues to worsen forcing thousands of residents seek refuge in relief camps.
