Waterlogged Aizwal Road, Sonai MLA Accuses District Commissioner of Corruption and Negligence

Karim Uddin Barbhuiya, the sitting MLA of the Sonai constituency, has levelled serious allegations against Cachar District Commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha, accusing him of corruption and neglecting the needs of the public. Barbhuiya, also known as Saju, expressed his frustration over the DC’s inaction in addressing critical developmental issues in the district.

For over a month, the Silchar-Aizawl National Highway near Aulia Bazar has been submerged, causing significant inconvenience to daily commuters. On Sunday, MLA Barbhuiya took matters into his own hands, organizing the drainage clearance of the highway. He harshly criticized both the district administration and the government, stating that despite repeated memorandums and the road being flooded for such a prolonged period, no steps had been taken by the authorities.

Barbhuiya further condemned the district commissioner for failing to visit the families of six individuals who died in a boat capsize during recent floods in Sonai. He also pointed out that the DC had not made any efforts to inquire about the victims who drowned in the floodwaters. “This DC is arrogant and is only focused on his own profit while sitting comfortably in his office,” Barbhuiya claimed.

In a passionate statement, the MLA said, “Today, with the people of the area, I started the work of road repairs because the administration and the government have been inactive even after submitting multiple memorandums. Twenty-five days ago, during the last flood, nine people from the Sonai Constituency drowned, but the District Commissioner never visited the bereaved families or offered condolences, let alone take any action to help the affected people. The police officials visited the families and assessed the situation, but the DC was nowhere to be seen.”

He continued, “It has been a month since the road was flooded. The interesting thing is, that this is not just any other road but a national highway, and NHIDCL has been absent for so long without any repair work. With no other options, today the locals began clearing the waterlogged road and drains. Now, after we started the work, NHIDCL has shown up. I condemn this government and the Chief Minister, who are only good for show and making tall claims on television. The DC is inactive; I have never seen him leave his office to proactively do any work.”

Despite his criticisms, MLA Barbhuiya thanked NHIDCL for eventually joining the locals in the restoration efforts, even though it was at the last moment.

The National Highway 54 has been inundated for the past month. Although the incessant rainfall has ceased, the waterlogging persists due to blocked drainage channels. Reports of accidents in the waterlogged area are frequent, with school and college students being the most affected by the situation.

The allegations made by MLA Barbhuiya highlight a significant administrative failure and have raised serious concerns about the district commissioner’s commitment to public welfare and development.
