Aajker Projonmo and Race Theatre join hands to announce three-day drama festival – ‘Theatrer Poush Porob’

Aajker Projonmo Theatre Group, a local youth theatre group, and Race Theatre (Pailapool) are all set to organise a three-day drama/theatre festival from December 17-19 at Silchar Gandhi Bhawan. The drama festival has been named ‘Theatre’s Poush Porob’. Although a total of seven teams will take part in it, eights productions will be staged in these three days. According to the convener of the organising committee, Dr Indranil Dey, the event would be organised in full compliance with the guidelines, which have been prescribed to prevent the further outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, none could organise any sort of theatre festival for more than a year and a half. Moreover, due to the non-availability of Silchar District Library auditorium, an additional financial burden has been placed on the production teams. Six groups from Barak Valley will stage their plays. A theatre group is also coming from Dharmanagar in the neighbouring state of Tripura.

Sayan Biswas, the joint convener of the organising committee, said, “Although the auditorium at Gandhi Bhawan is not conducive to theatre in that sense, the Natya Utsav will be made suitable. Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty will inaugurate the theatre festival on Friday, December 17. Two young drama directors from Karimganj district and one from Lakhipur will also be present as special guests.” The first day of the stage will be dedicated to the late playwright Shyamal Roy of Race Theatre.

The lineup

On that day, two plays will be performed by the artists of the Learners Theatre Group of Dharmanagar and Bibartan Theatre Group of Hailakandi. The next day’s stage will be dedicated to the late teacher and artiste Sushil Chandra Das of Sonbeel Kalibari area. On Saturday, the second day of production, artistes from Aajker Projonmo Theatre, Race Theatre and Silchar Cultural Unit will perform on the stage. The third and final stage will be dedicated to the memory of Tapash Kanti Majumdar, former secretary of Tarun Sangha and a prominent cultural organiser. “On that day, plays of Aajker Projonmo Theatre Group, Ganasur and Silchar Nandonik’s will be staged,” added Biswas.

Sayan Biswas said there would also be cultural programmes every evening of the festival. “We are also expecting the cooperation of local artists and people from cultural circles,” he said.
