Along with the entire country, Silchar is also celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. An event was organised at Fatak Bazar, Silchar earlier today. DC, Laya Madduri, Silchar MP, Rajdeep Roy and deputy speaker, Assam Assembly and Sonai MLA, Aminul Haque Laskar attended the event.

It is worth mentioning here that, Mahatma Gandhi visited Fatak Bazar during his 1921 Barak Valley visit addressed a massive gathering in Fatak Bazar on August 28, 2019. A statue of Mahatma Gandhi was built on that stage which is still there. During today’s event, the organisers proposed to the present dignitaries to dedicate the Fatak Bazar road as Mahatma Gandhi Road.

Rajdeep Roy during his speech welcomed the proposal. He said that MG Roads are there all across India and around the world however there is none is Silchar town. “This is a good proposal and we must have a road dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. I am not saying that Fatak Bazar will be renamed, but we will see if we can find a road somewhere in Silchar and rename it as Mahatma Gandhi Road. We will speak with the government to seek necessary approvals,” Roy said.

Aminul Haque Laskar, who recently in the Assam Assembly proposed to rename SM Dev Civil Hospital as Pechai Mia Civil Hospital spoke about the history of Fatak Bazar. He said during the British period there was a ‘Fatak’ which means a Jail and as the market surrounded the jail, it got its name as Fatak Bazar. Laskar proposed we must rename it as Gandhi Bazar and dedicate it to the sacrifices of Mahatma Gandhi for whom India attained its Independence.

Deputy Commissioner, Laya Madduri emphasised on the necessity of cleanliness. She urged the shopkeepers and business owners to take care of Swacchata in the market complex. She also highlighted the fact that single-use plastic is banned and one must try and generate awareness about it. She requested the shop-owners to put a notice at the entrance of their store stating that one must bring their own bags as polythene bags as banned.

Rajdeep Roy and Aminul Haque Laskar also spoke about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to make India a plastic-free clean country.
