3 Police officers in Karimganj arrested in connection with constable recruitment scandal

After the controversy surrounding the question paper leaking scandal for SI post examination in Karimganj, the district is once again under the limelight for all the wrong reasons. Now, in the constable recruitment examination, allegations of corruption and favouritism have shaken the district administration.

According to the allegation of several infuriated candidates, during the physical test of the constable recruitment examination, which took place in Karimganj’s Government HS School ground, several police officers misused their position of power to pass their children in the interview test who were previously failed during their interviews. After receiving the complaint, Karimganj Superintendent of Police, Padmanabh Baruah took matters into his own hands and after gathering enough evidence through CCTV footage, filed an FIR against three police officers and an Inspector for corrupting the recruitment process in favour of their own kin. Reports claim that candidates Ashesh Sinha, Shibam Sinha and Baishali Chanda, failed in their respective interviews on September 15, 23 and 26 respectively. But even then, they later somehow passed the test with the help of their fathers, who were allegedly present during the test.

The FIR names 6 individuals, among them, were Inspector Tapash Sinha, SI Bolai Chanda and Nursing Staff Debashish Sinha, who used their power to give preference to their children in the constable recruitment examination, whereas neither of them officially passed the interview. Then in the CCTV footage, the performance of the concerned candidates in the physical test also cast further doubts as to how they got selected over other meritorious candidates. Also, in this connection, a certain employee of the company named Infoclave, which was contracted for the purpose of facilitating the physical test, was arrested.

While talking to Barak Bulletin, Karimganj Sadar OC Bijit Das, who is in charge of the investigation, said that apart from arresting the accused people, one computer harddisk, 4 laptops, 1 set-top box, Interview result sheet, a duplicate copy of the selection committee’s proceedings, were recovered from their possession. “Three police officers have been arrested among the 6 accused in the scandal. They were produced in court on Tuesday evening, following which they were granted 2 days of police remand by the court after hearing their appeal”, said OC Bijit Das.

Although the accused have been apprehended and timely intervention of the Karimganj SP somehow managed to save the recruitment process for constable, people have been claiming that there might be more people connected to this scandal, as now this scandal has come to the forefront of people’s conscience.
