Administration conducting price control drive across Silchar, several shops closed, E-rickshaws seized

Responding to several complaints of price hike, Cachar district administration has launched a drive across Silchar town. Magistrates along with assistant commissioners are paying surprise visits to shops to check the selling price.

Assistant Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal visited Sadar Ghat and Itkhola market. “The selling price of most vegetables was stable except Ginger and Tomato,” said Agarwal.

“We have been getting intel about vendors selling vegetables at a far higher price. Accordingly we conducted the drive and action will be taken against the guilty under Essential Commodities Act,” Aggarwal informed.

In the Sadar Ghat market two shops were closed. Kamal Uddin Laskar was selling ginger and carrot at an inflated price point. In the same market, shop of Dhirendra Kumar Roy was also closed due to non-display of price board. He could not furninsh license nor did he issue any cashmemo.

In the Itkhola market too two vegetable retail shops were closed. Shop of Biki Paul was shut for selling Ginger at Rs 200 per kilogram and tomato at Rs 100 kilogram. Shop of Sankar Roy was closed for selling Ginger at Rs 160 per kilogram.

Assistant Commissioner Maria Tanim went on an inspection drive along with supply inspector carried out at Sanjay Market (Rangirkhari) and National Highway market. “The selling price was mostly stable but few vendors did not display the price chart as they should. The moment they saw us, they started putting it out. We have warned them,” said Tanim.

After her inspection, Tanim enforced three shops to pull their shutter down. “They were found selling their vegetables at higher prices,” said Tanim.

Nirmal Roy  of Sanjay market was selling carrot at Rs 100 per kg. Haripada Roy at National Highway market was selling French beans at Rs 100 per kg Vicky Roy at National Highway market was Selling Brinjal at Rs 60 per kg.

Apart from vegetables and essential commodities, the administration has received complaints about auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws charging passengers more than what they should.

“Enforcement drive was conducted in different parts of the town against e-rickshaws and autorickshaws for charging surcharged fare,” informed the administration.

Transport team have seized seven E-rickshaws and three auto rickshaws. Surprise drives across the district will continue, informed the administration.
