Barak Valley responds to "lack-of-merit" mockery, shines bright in Assam's Civil Services

The Assam Public Service Commission declared the results of combined competitive examinations held under it. This result of the 2020 batch, includes important public services like the Assam Civil Service, Assam Police Service, Superintendent of Taxes, District Transport Officer, Block Development Officer and others. This recruitment drive by the APSC will fill up 331 vacancies in different offices of the state government. Among the 331 officers, there are candidates from all three districts of Barak Valley, who will join the different cadres.

With this significant success in CCE, the applicants of Barak Valley gave a befitting response to the sly ‘Lack of Merit’ mockery. Often after the results of competitive examinations are announced, “Barak Valley has less talent” is what gets peddled. This result definitely comes as an egg on the face of all those peddling such theories.

Barak Bulletin reached out to the aspirants, who cleared the prestigious civil service examination under APSC this year. Among them is Ayushi Kalwar, who has secured Rank 16 in Assam Civil Service, along with her, Md Alamgir Laskar has secured Rank 85 in the Assam Civil Service. Gaurav Bhattacharjee has secured Rank 46 in Assam Police Service this year.

Ritambara Nath, secured Rank 4 in the Assam Police Service this year. In her second attempt, she secured this rank. About what helped her clear the examination on her second attempt, she said, “I have always had that in mind that this is something that I have to get into. The zeal kept me going. I knew I might have to keep trying and I had the perseverance. I started off with UPSC while I was in Delhi for my undergrads. But I thought of starting off with APSC. The syllabus was also quite similar to that of UPSC, which was a plus point for me”.

Md Alamgir Laskar, who is a chemical engineer by degree cleared the civil services examination under APSC in his first attempt and secured the Rank 85 in ACS. Alamgir has done his high school at KV ONGC and later went to Delhi to prepare for UPSC. Alamgir said, what helped him crack the examination was the lockdown. He said, “APSC was never part of the plan, but then the lockdown happened and when APSC released the notification in September 2020 I found out that the new syllabus of APSC is exactly the same as UPSC for which I was preparing for the last two years. I thought I won’t have to study anything extra, but that was my misconception. For GS V I had to study a lot but in the end, everything worked for me”. Even though he is taking a call for UPSC, he said, he is going to join the service for sure.

Gaurav Bhattacharjee who secured Rank 46 in Assam Police Service said it was his second attempt this time. Gaurav managed a full-time job and preparation at the same time. About what helped him clear, he said, “The prelims exam was more or less the same as any competitive examination and I was preparing for some time. But I did mains specific preparation as much as possible as the syllabus was really vast. My coaching materials helped me grasp the syllabus. I am excited to join the service”.

Hailakandi’s Ayushi Kalwar, who cleared Assam Civil Services with Rank 16 in the 2020 batch has also cleared UPSC with an All India Rank of 618. She was unreachable on her number but a family member confirmed to Barak Bulletin, she won’t join ACS as she is already undergoing Foundation Course training from LBSNAA for Indian Revenue Service.
