Journalists burn Ajmal's effigy in Silchar; demand immediate arrest

A group of journalists gathered in front of Deputy Commissioner’s office and agitated against AIUDF supremo Badaruddin Ajmal. Yesterday, Ajmal was seen abusing a journalist while on camera. The journalist asked him about his stance in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and if he would be a part of the third front. His response was, “In Delhi we are now with Congress and then we will see what happens…,” the journalist counter questioned Ajmal, “So, you will support the government in Delhi be it a BJP or a Congress?” Ajmal lost his composure and started abusing the journalist, he even went on to say that he has the support of thousands and will break the journalist’s head. Ajmal’s verbal bombardment continued for a while and the video clip of the same went viral since yesterday.

Such a stern reaction against the press which is considered as the fourth pillar of democracy has been widely condemned all across. Today, media fraternity of Silchar walked to Deputy Commissioner’s office and demonstrated demanding strict action against Ajmal in next 24 hours. The group then went to Khudiram Bose’s statue in Club Road and burnt Ajmal’s effigy.

Abhijit Bhattacharjee, Dilip Kumar Singha, Pijush Das, Arindam Gupta, Shivashish Bhattacharjee, Snehangshu Bhattacharjee, Raja Dhar and others were present in the demonstration. “The politicians reach out to the mass through the media and such an abusive behaviour against a journalist is unacceptable. We want the government to take actions against Ajmal in next 24 hours or else we will intensify our agitation,” said the group in their remarks. They added, “If needed we will boycott Ajmal and AIUDF.”
