Karimganj Police releases man who swam to Bangladesh highlighting loopholes in border security

On August 11, a man was seen at Karimganj’s Bisarjan Ghat, jumping into the Kushiyara River. The boy started swimming in the river, visibly uncomfortable due to the heavy monsoon currents. Locals gathered and pleaded with him to return to the shore, but the man kept swimming towards the opposite side of the river, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Government of Bangladesh. Noticing the border breach, Border Security Force personnel attempted to chase him down. However, by the time they reached him in their country boat, the man had already crossed into Bangladesh’s jurisdiction.

He swam to the shore in Bangladesh, where the Border Guard Bangladesh apprehended him for illegally entering the country by trespassing the borders. However, after counseling and a thorough investigation, the BGB found that the man was suffering from mental health-related issues. Consequently, they decided to deport him on August 12.

This morning, the BGB escorted the man and handed him over to the BSF. The BSF conducted a routine investigation and determined that the man is a resident of the Patharkandi area in the Karimganj district, identified as Jewel Baidya. After receiving clearance, Baidya was handed over to the Karimganj Police.

The Superintendent of Karimganj Police, following counseling, decided to release Jewel Baidya into the custody of his family members. The police warned him against engaging in such felonies again, as they might result in serious charges against him.

While Jewel Baidya was found to be an innocent man with certain instabilities, the same route could potentially be exploited by individuals or groups with vested interests to breach security. This incident highlights the loopholes in the border security system. Not long ago, a man rode his motorcycle from Bangladesh to Karimganj and managed to evade preventive measures.
