Huge cache of ammunition recovered by Assam Rifles from Lakhipur

A huge cache of ammunition was recovered during an operation by Assam Rifles at Saisel Punjee in Cachar district on Tuesday.

Sources said the operation was carried out on the basis of specific information in a jungle at Saisel Punjee, which falls under Lakhipur constituency, around 34km from Silchar. Ammunition including 518 rounds of bullets (463 rounds of 9.96mm and 55 rounds of 5.56mm) were recovered, sources said.

There were no reports of any arrest in this connection, as per last available information.

It can be mentioned that the area, from where the ammunition was recovered, is very near to the spot from where a cadre of the Hmar People’s Convention (President) outfit was arrested with arms and ammunition on June 4.

HPC (P) cadre Lalbia Kung was apprehended during a joint operation by Assam Rifles and police from Hmarkhawlien on June 4 (Tuesday) morning. A huge cache of arms and ammunition was also recovered after grilling the cadre.

The cache included one AK-56 rifle, one M-33 rifle, 53 rounds of 7.55 bullets, 10 rounds of 5.56mm bullets, two magazines, two binoculars, four cheque books, four daggers, three pairs of hunting shoes, around Rs. 22,000 in cash and many other items.

Another suspected militant Lorens Sinsing (26) was nabbed from Dilkhush, a village under Lakhipur constituency, on June 3 (Monday) night. Rs. 34,500 in cash, three ATM cards and a mobile phone was recovered from Lorens’ possession.
