Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha helps in conducting last rites of two dead in floods; says proper treatment could have saved them

It’s not easy times for people of Barak Valley as all districts are heavily affected by flood water. The natural calamity left thousands of people homeless, seeking shelter in relief camps. Things are worse in rural villages, where relief or medical aid are a rare case in distress. It’s the poor, who is suffering the most, and they deserve all the help and cooperation from people, who are in a condition to help.

In Karimganj district, MLA Kamalakhaya Dey Purkayasatha did something which won many hearts all across.

The MLA, after getting to know that two people have died in a flood affected village, rushed to the spot on Sunday morning. He immediately reached out to the deceased’s family and helped in conducting the last right rituals. Because of the rain, all the crematoriums are underwater at this stage. Left with limited options, the MLA with the help of few villagers, conducted the last rites on national highway 8 (NH8). Nishi Namasudra and Kulendra Namasudra were uncle and nephew in relation. They have been survived by their wives and a child each. “They are very poor families and have no earning member alive to feed these kids. Moreover, I also feel if they were treated properly they would have been still alive,” said Purkayastha while speaking to barakbulletin.com.

The MLA also took a jibe at the ruling government and said the water resources department has turned to a money making avenue for the corrupts. He is of the opinion that the sanctioned relief is not being delivered properly. He also alleged that the top brass in the department are more concerned about making money instead of helping people. During the conversation, he mentioned about many such embarkments which were repaired last year, and has actually collapsed again this year.

“Why would a 40 and 50-year-old man die? Obviously it’s because of lack of proper treatment and attention. I believe if the government and the departments had paid attention, we could have saved both of them”, concluded Purkayastha.
