Pulwama attack: 'Objectionable' post on social media lands teacher in legal soup

An FIR has been lodged in Silchar against a teacher of Guwahati for allegedly posting “objectionable” comments on social media in connection with the recent terror attack on Indian soldiers at Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir.

Over 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans were killed and many others injured when a car laden with explosives rammed into a CRPF bus – part of a convoy – in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday afternoon.

The bus which was carrying 51 CRPF jawans and was on its way from Jammu to Srinagar, was hit by a Mahindra Scorpio, which was loaded with over 300 kilograms of explosives and driven by a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) suicide bomber. As a result, over 40 personnel died and many others were injured.

The FIR was lodged by a resident of Chengkoorie Road in Silchar Subhashish Choudhury at Silchar Sadar Police Station on Saturday afternoon against Papri Z Banerjee, an assistant professor at Icon Commerce College, Guwahati.

According to sources, the case has been filed under section 507, 294 of the Indian Penal Code and section 66 under the IT, Act.

According to the allegation by Choudhury, Banerjee posted some “objectionable” comments on Facebook. Many people commented against her post and expressed their anger, but the teacher didn’t stop and went on posting more comments against the soldiers, who were killed in the dastardly attack on Thursday.

A Pakistani journalist Tarek Fatah reportedly shared the post by Banerjee.

On the other hand, Assam Police also tweeted from their official twitter handle and assured strict action against her. Later, Papri deleted her post.

Cachar superintendent of police Mugdhajyoti Deb Mahanta said the case is not under the purview of Cachar police authority and that it has been transferred to Guwahati. Necessary steps will be taken by the Guwahati police authority, he said.

Sources said Papri, who has received a large number of threatening messages after her “controversial” post, has been suspended by the college authority. She was not arrested, till last available reports.
