Family says ASI Singh was put under immense pressure at work, demands investigation; “Suicide never a solution,” SP Cachar

Rashmi Singh, Kiran Singh, and Arun Singh have lost their father, ASI Goubidhu Singh. Their mother is unwell and shocked. According to the official statement of Cachar Police, ASI Singh shot himself using his own service gun at around 3:15 pm on March 21. He was sitting on his chair at his designated table and shot himself in presence of his colleagues at Silchar Sadar Police Station.

His daughter, Rashmi Singh counters the official statement and alleges that there is a conspiracy behind the death of her father. “Why would he commit suicide. The Police department is trying to frame it as suicide. My father left home happily and said that he will do lunch at home. If he had to kill himself, why would he ask my mother to make lunch? We demand a detailed investigation of the death of my father,” added Rashmi Singh.

She also mentioned that her father’s application for leave wasn’t approved. “My father almost fainted while on duty because of his high blood pressure. He is a patient with diabetes too. We went to Guwahati recently for his treatment and we have all these documents. Yet, his application for leave wasn’t granted and he was put under huge pressure at work,” said Rashmi Singh.

Cachar SP Dr. Ramandeep Kaur expressed her condolences at the death of ASI Singh. “The matter is being investigated to identify why he took the step that he did. He has used his service gun to kill himself while on duty at around 3:15 pm,” she said in her official statement.

When asked about the family’s allegations, and officials being put under immense work pressure, SP Kaur responded, “There is pressure in all offices and everywhere there is workload. If someone is under pressure, they need to discuss the same with their colleagues and superiors and talk it out. ASI Gourbidhu Singh has always been a hardworking Police Official. He was softspoken and seldom talked about his issues. If there is a problem, a solution needs to be talked out. Suicide is never a solution.”

ASI Singh’s dead body has been handed over to the family, and today morning, the family performed the last rites following all rituals. Cachar Police offered his mortal remains a formal ceremonial salute.
