AICC's Mahima Singh Highlights Nyay Patra In Silchar; "Congress Mukt or Congress Yukt?" Responds to BJP's Jibe

All India National Congress Spokesperson Mahima Singh, currently the Chief of Communication of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, held a press conference at the Congress Bhawan in Silchar earlier today. The party is fielding Surya Kanta Sarkar as its candidate. The electorate of Silchar will head to the polling booths on April 26, during the second phase of polling in the country. Congress faces a three-way battle in Silchar as the All India Trinamool Congress has also nominated former AIUDF MP from Karimganj, Radheshyam Biswas. Silchar elected BJP candidate Rajdeep Roy in the 2019 elections, defeating Sushmita Dev of Congress, who has since switched to TMC and is currently an MP in the Rajya Sabha.

Mahima Singh highlighted Congress’ Nyay Guarantees during the press conference: “Yuva Nyay (justice for youth), Nari Nyay (justice for women), Kisan Nyay (farmer justice), Shramik Nyay (worker justice), Hissedari Nyay (participatory justice).”

Supreme Court Advocate Singh urged the electorates of Silchar to stay informed when they enter the polling booths on April 26. She shared, “The UPA Government served 75 lakh appointment letters per year, which dropped to 29 lakhs per year between 2013 and 2019 (Modi’s first term), and since 2019, the drastic decline in employment has continued. In fact, there are 10 lakh vacancies in the Central Government, and the government has no intentions of addressing unemployment.”

Singh also highlighted how the current government and its decisions have recently been questioned by the Supreme Court of India.

Singh tried to communicate Congress’ promises while also highlighting the shortcomings or rather dictatorial chain of affairs in Narendra Modi’s term. She refused to speculate on the election results, stating, “I am not an astrologer,” but at the same time, she asserted that the INDIA Alliance will “oust the Modi government” and not let them have a third term, contradicting most opinion poll estimates.

While Mahima Singh was articulate in her criticisms of the ruling party, she dodged a question related to the failure of the INDIA Alliance to form a strategic alliance in Silchar. It is evident that with the Trinamool Congress and Congress fielding candidates, the opposition votes will be divided, aiding Modi Government’s Parimal Suklabaidya in securing a seat. “The Indian National Congress believes in democratic values and respects situations where agreement is not reached. Differences in opinion and seat distribution are acceptable,” Singh responded.

She was also asked about Narendra Modi’s Congress Mukt Bharat ambitions. “Congress Mukt or Congress Yukt?” she countered. Adding, “More than 30% of BJP’s people in positions are from Congress. We have seen how the Finance Minister recently said BJP’s doors are open for all.”

Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, recently stated, “Congress is in ICU, and soon Congress will be dead.” Former Congress Minister Sarma, who moved to BJP before the 2016 Assembly Election, often mocks the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee by claiming that half of them frequently reach out to him to switch to BJP. He recently suggested that Bhupen Bora, State President of Congress, will also join BJP before the next Assembly Elections.

When asked for a reaction to these statements, Singh said, “Himanta Biswa Sarma might have left Congress but could not leave his love for the party and the party workers. That is why he keeps thinking about Congress and Congress workers,” once again avoiding the fact that Congress has lost Sushmita Dev to TMC, and Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha to BJP since 2021, both considered the backbones of Barak Valley politics for the party. Moreover, Siddeque Ahmed, a current elected MLA of Indian National Congress from South Karimganj, is now campaigning for the BJP candidate, exposing organizational loopholes in the party and the leaders’ inability to inspire party members.
